Letter in Sunday Times
Just belatedly posting a letter that was published in the Sunday Times on 6th Jan (ie Sunday before last). It is by Dane Clouston of this parish. Nice one, Dane! Lib Dems' real role When I nearly became Liberal MP for Newbury in 1974 (twice) I stood on a platform of greater equality of opportunity in education, health and inheritance - in contrast to the Tories, and the privatisation of all those activities, except those which cannot be rationed by price - in contrast to Labour before clause 4 was dropped (Liberal Democrats show their true colours with new leader Mr Beige, Simon Jenkins, Comment, December 23). As I see it, the issue of nationalisation/privatisation has been replaced by the issue of the European Union, on which the Liberal Democrats are regrettably pro-EU fanatics. There would be a role for them if they became EU-sceptic, in which case, as I wrote to Nick Clegg, they could perhaps re-merge with the Liberal party and call themselves once again Liberals rather than Lib Dems.
