Magazine: The Liberal
I've recently discovered a very readable magazine called The Liberal and would just like to recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen a copy yet. It was launched a couple of years ago, though charmingly it claims to continue the tradition of a magazine of the same name founded by Shelley, Lord Byron and Leigh Hunt which ran for 4 issues in the 1820s! The magazine (the modern one, not Shelley's rag!) can now be found occasionally in some local newsagents, which is where I first noticed a copy. The Liberal has a strong emphasis on literary and political essays rather than political activism, though it does cover (for example) the LibDem leadership election. So far as I can tell, it isn't formally tied to any particular political party, but takes an interest in Liberalism worldwide. For instance, one of the contributors to the current issue (Autumn 07) is Helen Suzman, the former South African MP and veteran opponent of apartheid. The magazine's website is at: http://www.theliberal.co.uk

OK, the current issue showing on their website is still the Autumn 2007 issue which I mentioned above. There is nothing on their website about any problem or change in their production schedule, but they seem to be running really late. I do hope they haven't gone under, as this really is a very good magazine.
