Regulation of Investigatory Powers
So the LGA Chairman has written to Local Authorities warning them not to misuse their powers of surveillance including phone and e-mail records. The fact that he has done so demonstrates public concern about the use of such powers in matters such as dog-fouling and fly-tipping. Do fellow Liberals think that local government should have such powers? If so, should their use be more specifically restricted by an amending Act to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act? Should Liberal Party policy outline ways in which we would circumscribe or abolish these powers? My view is that the extension of the powers of surveillance by the state under the present government is a matter of serious concern. it is yet another of the plethora of examples of infringements of civil liberties by legislators in recent years. What do you think?

I don't think local government authorities should have the power to have surveillance on residents. These kinds of power should be left to the police and security services and only used in serious matters, certainly nothing to do with dog poop.
