SmokeFree Liverpool I'm curious to know what the Liberal Party's response to this is:

It concerns Liverpool City Council's endorsement of a move to rate smoking scenes in films 18.

Anyone?
I can't believe that none of the Liberal Party supporters on this board have anything to say about this.

I think I said over at the OLA that I was against it. Not that I'm in the Liberal party.

I believe you did.
Since it seems that we (non-supporters!) are the only people who appear to be reading this forum at the moment perhaps we should try to work out what the Liberal Party policy is likely to be.
I suspect they're against the measures - even if only because the Council is proposing them.

Yes, I think that's likely. Of course, since Liverpool is one of the continuing Liberal parties strongest areas, one would think that they'd have already commented on this.

I would have commented - but I went away for Easter and have only just come back.

Possibly so. Still, I just checked and there is nothing about this yet on the rather active Liverpool Liberal Party blog. I'm sure that is where it would be:

Maybe they just aren't very excited about it. After all, it isn't that Liverpool City Council are planning to impose their own censorship (which really would be outrageous!), but simply that they are expressing an opinion about a proposal for film classifications nationally.
I struggled a bit before finally voting "against" in the poll above. On the one hand, if we are going to have an age-based system of film classification at all, then it is presumably because we think films can warp the development of tender young minds (ho ho) and we want to moderate that influence. And actually I do agree with that. On the other hand, in the link Appius provided the film classification board are quoted as saying that they already take smoking into account when classifying films, and that an automatic '18' rating is too blunt an instrument. That sounds right to me, so I'll go along with the professional censors (rather than the amateurs) and vote "against" the proposal.

Interesting. You've just won the prize for the closest anyone I've discussed this with has come to supporting the measure. And you support a party which is in opposition to that both of most of the others I've asked and of the council in question.
Anyway, I think there is actually some talk of Liverpool striking out alone on this one.
I have written to the leader of Liverpool City Council to complain about his council's illiberal policies.

I voted `against`. For one I think it is up to the individual to make a choice about an issue like this, but for another I also think it is unenforceable. It won't happen nationally, and it makes Liverpool look silly.

I can't think of anyone who's defended this policy. It's certainly unpopular on the Liberal Youth forums.
Anyway, this is the sort of thing I was talking about on the defection thread. If the Liberal Party is accepting someone that even this group thinks is unsuitable as a candidate what does that say? 8)
