Torrington 58 Will be of interest to members of both parties:-
Seminar at the London School of Economics & Political Science, Saturday 14 June 2008 10.30-16.45 Location: S75 St Clements Building
In 1958 Mark Bonham Carter, grandson of Herbert Asquith, defeated the Conservative candidate at the Devon constituency of Torrington, winning by 219 votes. The victory was the beginning of a long revival for the Liberals who had managed to only take 2.5% of the vote in the 1951 general election. ( I remember Mark telling us how his wife had to stay in the car when he visited some pubs - women weren't allowed!)
To mark the anniversary of the Torrington by-election the Archives of the London School of Economics, Liberal Democrat History Group and the Richard Scurrah Wainwright Trust are organising a seminar to investigate the post-1945 experience of the Liberal Party - from the defeats of the 1945 general election to the aftermath of the Lib-Lab Pact.
The day will include a keynote address by Lord Dholakia and Lord Wallace on Campaigning Liberals in the 50s and 60s and sessions during the day will cover:
Liberal campaigning: elections and by elections
Local Government – grassroots survival
Leaders and leadership
Collaboration – pacts and other parties.
Speakers include Lord Kirkwood, Lord Greaves, Michael Meadowcroft and Martin Wainwright.
