Who are the Liberal Party?
To quote from the party's national website:
The Liberal Party exists to build a Liberal Society in which every citizen shall possess liberty, property and security and none shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Its chief care is for the rights and opportunities of the individual, and in all spheres it sets freedom first.
A full set of Liberal Party policies can be found on the party's website: http://www.liberal.org.ukWho aren't the Liberal Party?
This forum is mainly concerned with the Liberal Party in the UK, not with the Liberal Parties of Australia or Canada.
The Liberal Party also shouldn't be confused with the Liberal Democrats, as we are a completely separate party with different policies. In 1988 the former Liberal Party - the long-established party of Gladstone and Asquith - voted to merge with the Social Democrats, forming the Social and Liberal Democrats (SLD) who were later renamed as simply the Liberal Democrats. However, several local Liberal Associations and many individuals opposed this merger, and therefore banded together to continue the original Liberal Party.

It should also be added that several disaffected Liberal Democrats have come back to the party and that we are getting members new to politics!

And, just to balance this thread out, the continuing Liberal Party's founder and first President, Michael Meadowcroft, joined the Liberal Democrats in September.

We can build this party ! The Liberal Party can grow and several issues that are emerging onto the political agenda are in our favour.
To suceed we need a party that is confident and prepared to move outside of its comfort zone, prepared to stand up to vested interests by the promotion of its policies and the development of other policies relevent to the 21C.
The Liberal Democrats ( who inherited the membership of most Liberal supporters ) grew by standing where they had not stood before and so should we.
